The artist, Moshe Elazar Castel (1909-1991), was an Israeli painter, from a Sefardi family who came to Israel from Castille in 1492. He studied at Betzalel between 1922-1925. Then he studied at the Julien Academy and at the Ecole de Louvre in Paris. In 1940 he returned to Israel and lived in Tzfat, and from this period onward he was greatly influenced by Jewish mysticism. During the Independence War of 1948 he was among the founders of the Artists’ Colony in Tzfat, and his works are famously displayed at many government buildings: the International Convention Center, the Shir Tehila at the Knesset building in Jerusalem, the Kotel Tehila at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem, and other famous buildings across Israel.
