Interesting document on official letterhead of the Beit Yisrael v’Damesek Eliezer yeshiva [Vizhnitz yeshiva in Bnei Brak] when it was led by the Admor Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Hager, the Yeshuot Moshe. Bears a list of new students from the yeshiva who are required to draft, from April 14, 1948, before the establishment of the State of Israel. On the document are names of Rav Moshe Ornester (later the son-in-law of the Imrei Haim of Vizhnitz), Rav Baruch Welzer, later CEO of Vizhnitz Institutes in Israel, and other names. Signed by Rav Dov Berl Welzer, who was a right-hand man of the Admor Damesek Eliezer of Vizhnitz. On March 9, 1948, in the first stage of the War of Independence, before the establishment of the State of Israel, Israel Galili, head of the Hagana's National Headquarters, ordered that "the decision was made that yeshiva students, according to approved lists, are exempt from military service.” He said: An agreement of this kind was signed between the Chief Rabbis at the time, the Av Beit Din of the Eda Haredit and the heads of yeshivas in Jerusalem on behalf of the Vaad HaYeshivot and the Commander of the People's Service in Jerusalem, 4 days prior to the establishment of the State, in which the yeshiva heads undertook not to register students who did not come from the yeshiva framework and not to prejudice those who chose to enlist [recently exposed on the site 'Kikar Hashabat' from the documents of the State Archives and the document before us gives confirmation that this arrangement was already begun in the period prior to the establishment of the state, since the document before us is from prior to that].
