The rabbis call for a day of prayer and public fast for men over 18 years old; whoever finds this difficult can give charity instead in the amount of no less than $2: "על כן נשאנו ונתננו בכובד ראש וגמרנו לקבוע תענית ציבור ויום תפלה על גברים מבני י"ח שנה ומעלה… ומי שקשה לו התענית יפדנו בצדקה לא פחות משני דולר"
