Volume containing a complete set of all sections of Shem Hagedolim and Vaad lachachamim by Rabbeinu Chaim Yosef David Azulai, with comments and additions. Second and rare edition.
On the front guard leaf, a lengthy dedication handwritten and signed by Rabbi Ben Zion Ettlinger, the son of the Aruch Laner to his friend Rabbi Simcha Bamberger, the son of Rabbi Yitzchak Dov of Wurzburg, for His wedding. The beginning of the dedication is a poem of four verses with an acrostic of the groom’s name, Simcha.
On the inside binding, a signature (in square script) of Rabbi Ben Zion. Handwritten comments at the beginning of the book and on its leaves. A handwritten notation was added alongside the Chida’s comment on Shut Rabbi Yisrael of Bruna: "ועכשיו נדפסו מחדש בשטעטטין בשנת תר"כ". Shut Mahari of Bruna mentioned in the comment appears in this catalog with a dedication by Rabbi Yitzchak Dov Bamberger to his son, Simcha.

At the beginning of the book, the Chida’s biography by Elyakim Carmoli. At its end, comments by Rabbi Aharon Fold and Elyakim Carmoli. In the publisher’s foreword to this section, he notes that he received a donation for publishing the book from the famed Sir Shimon Wolf Rothschild when he was only 19!
A total of three sections in a single volume. approx. 17.5 cm.
Good overall condition. Some leaves were misplaced in the binding. A tear to a single leaf, partly taped. A tear to the guard leaf close to the dedication yet not affecting the text. Detached and dismantled binding.
