Lot 114:
The book “Complete Sacrifices” is an exegesis on the Rambam on the laws of shchita (ritual slaughter) by the Rabbi Avraham Ankaooh, Livorno 1858, with the book “The Purity of the Silver” (separate title page), Livorno 1860. The book “Complete Sacrifices” raises great opposition, the Rav Moshe Tzivon, rabbi in Oran (Algeria) wrote a legal decision against two of the exegeses of HaRav Ankaooh (“Other Silver” and “Complete Sacrifices”) and claimed that they were distorted and erroneous and it was illegal to rely on them and illegal for a person to hold them in his house, things got so bad that people tore the book into pieces and put in the pieces meat and intestines and made from it paper for cigarettes. The Rav Ankaooh printed the legal decision of HaRav Tzivon on the first page of “The Purity of the Silver” (this page is missing in many copies and is added here in a copy) and afterwards printed answers from rabbis from many communities in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Jerusalem who supported the Rabbi Ankaooh. Later in the composition the Rav Ankaooh refutes HaRav Tzivon and his faction, though the controversy over “Complete Sacrifices” continued in North Africa for many years and the sages of Tunisia declared a ban on the book. These compositions are very important for the genealogies and histories of the rabbis of North Africa (in the introduction to “Complete Sacrifices” the author mentions dozens of sages and rich men of Algeria and Morocco). On the title page of “Complete Sacrifices” is the dedication of the compiler (a little defective) and his signature. Good condition, a few stains.
