Letter signed by members of a local Belarussian community in which they request that a permanent shochet be sent to their community and state that they are not a party in the conflict over shochtim in the Dokszyce community.
The letter comes from the state of the Chabad gaon Menachem Mendel Kuperstock, rabbi of the Głębokie Chabad community (the village of Wochinfeueve was in his city’s district and was under his purview. The letter, in Russian Yiddish, is written by members of the community: “We, members of the Wochinfeueve community, are not parties in any way to the war taking place between the shochtim of Dokszyce, and we do not wish to become involved in any way, we only request that a shochet be sent to us to reside in the community.”
It seems that the village received shechita services from those in Dokszyce, another town under the authority of Rabbi Kuperstock. As accepted in the European communities, the issue of slaughterers was a sensitive issue like no other, therefore the residents of Wochinfeueve could not start slaughtering on their own before receiving the approval of the rabbi.
The letter is signed by more than 20 members of the community. A unique item on the history of European Jewry, the establishment of ritual slaughter, the responsibility of rabbis, etc.
