Background: Rabbi Yitzhak Meir Levin, son-in-law of the Imrei Emet of Gur, was the biggest activist of Agudat Israel during the days of the establishment of the state. Rabbi Levin wisely navigated the ship of Agudat Israel during the difficult ‘intoxicated’ days of Zionist power and managed to secure the ultra-Orthodox interests in the Land of Israel, despite the meager ultra-Orthodox power in the government’s institutions. The Rim Levin attracted most of the fire from the fanatical circles, who controlled the leadership before the return of the surviving remnants from Europe to Israel. The Rim Levin was backed for all his actions by most of the Torah greats and in particular by the Rabbi Aharon the Admor of Belz, Maran Ga’avad of Tchevin, and of course the Imrei Emet and Beit Yisrael of Gur. It would appear that it was easier for these fanatics to direct their ire at him than at those who supported him…
