Letter to avreichim who were jailed, handwritten by the Ga’avad of the Eida Charedit.

“No man may take paths that are contrary to the path of our teachings”—letter addressed to the businessman Rabbi Baruch Yehoshua Scheinberger. “I am happy to hear that the judgement of the two avreichim was in their favor, in the absence of incriminating evidence. On the other hand I was sorry to hear about the difficult limit given by house arrest, imposed upon them, something which I think is insufferable, and I have been promised that the religious opinion that we published will do its work and no man will take paths that are contrary to the path of our teachings.”

We don’t know what the background to this letter is, but there are no lack of conflicts over Jerusalem’s holiness, the innovation in this letter is the official backing given by the rabbis in certain cases. It would seem that the two avreichim did something against the law but which was greeted with pleasure by Haredi Judaism…
