Sefer Even Shtiyah, Shut on the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch, by Rabbi Eliezer Don Yichyeh Av Beit Din of Lutzin-Latvia (1838-1926), the son of Rabbi Shabtai Av Beit Din of Drissa, the author of Ta’am Megadim on the Pri Megadim on the Shulchan Aruch.
First edition in the author’s lifetime – Vilna, 1893. [4], 135, [1] leaves. In the National Library, the book appears in the Rare Book Collection. Approbation by Rabbi Elchanan Spektor of Kovna and Rabbi Shlomo Hacohen of Vilna. Lengthy introduction by the author.
Old binding. Minor stains. Very good condition.
Appearing before the author’s introduction is a dedication handwritten and signed by the author’s son and successor as Rav of Lutzin, Rabbi Ben Zion Don Yichyeh. The dedication is addressed to Rabbi Menachem Natan Auerbach of Jerusalem. In the dedication, he notes that he is sending him his father’s book for his book, Orach Ne’eman, which was sent to him previously.
At its end, he signs: "ז’ תמוז תרפ"ז, המכבדו ומברכו, בן ציון דון-יחיא חופ"ק לוצין בן אדמו"ר הגאון המחבר זצ"ל". In addition, his official stamp appears on the flyleaf and at the end of the book.
Additional stamps on the title page and more: "מספרי עזבון הרה"ג רבי יצחק איצק, בהרה"ג ר’ מנחם נתן נטע זצ"ל אויערבאך".
Inside the book, several significant comments, handwritten by one of the rabbis who had owned the book, or his first owner, the writer of the dedication, or its receiver, or maybe even both (one comment is written in different script).
Rabbi Ben Zion Don Yichyeh (1871-1941) the last Rav of Lutzin, author of Likutei Megadim. Was the son of Rabbi Eliezer Don Yichyeh, the Rav of Lutzin and author of Shut Even Shtiya. In 1900 was appointed Rav of Marinhaus in the Vitebsk shire.
After his father’s passing in 1906, he succeeded him as Rav of Lutzin, Latvia. was an active member of Hamizrachi movement. In 1934, published his father’s book Ta’am Megadim with his book Likutei Megadim. In 1939, published the second volume. Was murdered in the Holocaust with the members of his community in Av 1941.
The Gaon and Kabbalist Rabbi Menachem Natan Auerbach (1851-1930)—compiler of the books Orach Ne’eman in the four parts of the Shulchan Aruch and more, was the Rav of the Ruchama neighborhood in Jerusalem, one of the close friends of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, relative by marriage of Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld.
Rabbi Yitzchak (Itzak) Auerbach (1877-1951) the son of the above Rabbi Menachem Natan Auerbach. One of the rabbis of Jerusalem and Rosh Yeshiva of Etz Chaim. The son-in-law of the tzaddik of Warsaw Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Naftali Zilberberg. Author of Otzar Halacha.
