Lot 113:
“It follows that the Kollel has no permission nor right to places boxes except with Galician members abroad.”
Strongly worded letter of protest from the Vaad Klali Knesset Yisrael, the umbrella organization for kollels in Jerusalem, against the Chibat Yerushalayim Kollel of the Galician community, signed by Rabbi Isser Zalman Melzer and other Jerusalem rabbis. Jerusalem 1937.
The letter was sent to rabbis of London and criticizes representatives of the Kollel Galicia for a rumour which has reached them that they are swapping the kupot of the Knesset Yisrael with those of their own Kollel. “The referenced Kollel, bearing the name “Chibat Yerushalayim”, is nothing but a private Kollel for the support of some members of Galicia in Israel but they have no institutions, and their poor make use of the hospitals, orphanages, and yeshivot in Israel like any other poor person with no difference.”
At the top of the letter is signed Rabbi Isser Zalman Melzer, head of the Etz Chaim yeshiva, and other rabbis of Jerusalem and leaders of kollels such as Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Zelznik (a leader of Etz Chaim), Rabbi Asher Dov di Leon, a student of Rabbi Chaim Soloveitchik and a leader of Etz Chaim, and Rabbi Yehoshua Meir Reichman, an administrator of Bikur Cholim.
Alongside this item is included the original draft with addition of a number of handwritten lines by Rabbi Isser Zalman Melzer.
