The Admor Rabbi Simcha Bonem Kalish of Otvotzk (1851-1907) was the son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Worka and brother of Admor of Skierniewice. In 1868 (when he was only 17 years old) his father passed away—despite his young age he was certified as a rabbi by Rabbi Yaakov Aryeh of Radzimin and many of his father’s students accepted him as their leader. He recommended himself with the verse: “at 17 years of age he shepherded his brothers”. He was known as a yoreh and chered and took many chumrot upon himself, such as waiting 24 hours between milk and meat. He was in close communication with the Admor of Sochotchow (the Avnei Nezer), the Admor of Gur (Sfat Emet), and many other gedolim of the time.
