Pnei Yehoshua, an important, foundational work for those studying the Shas b’Iyun, by Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua Folk, the Av Beit Din of important communities such as Lviv, Berlin, Metz, and Frankfurt-am-Mein. Stefanski Sifrei Yesod 78. One volume containing two sections.
First section: on masechet Brachot, Shabbat, Pesachim, Beitza, Rosh Hashanah, Sukkah, Megillah, and a few chiddushim from Masechet Yoma. A similar edition to that of the first edition printed only a few years earlier—Frankfurt-am-Mein 1760. [1], 52, 66, 50, 36, 27, 12, 28 leaves.
Fourth section: on Masechtot Hulin, Makkot, Shvuot, and the Tur Choshen Mishpat. At the end are “Chiddushei Pnei Aryeh” on the Bava Kama by the author’s son. First edition, Furth 1780. [2], 81 leaves.
Approbations from the Nodah b’Yehuda of Prague and other rabbis. Stains, red faded page cuttings, repaired title page for the first section, tape on additional pages often damaging the text a little, binding partially detached and reinforced with tape, overall good condition.
Masechet Megillah has two leaves filled in by hand in pretty, uniform, calligraphic handwriting. The family name “Avelis” appears on a number of pages.
