Lot of 3 wonderful engravings depicting biblical scenes. Original engravings which quite accurately depict the events, by the artist Jan Luyken, who worked in Amsterdam at the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century. At the bottom is an inscription in Dutch explaining the work.

1. The Plague of Hail. Full and detailed description, rows and rows of hail that falls to the ground combined with fire, matches the readings describing the broken trees, etc.

2. The Flood. Description of the chaos prevailing in the land after the beginning of the descent of the flood from the sky along with abyssal springs. People and animals fled to the peaks that were still exposed, including reptiles and rodents. And in the background: Noah’s ark sailed peacefully and safely

3. The Destruction of Sodom. Fire and brimstone from heaven, destruction and ruin in all

The engravings are vibrant. Each is 49x42cm. Professionally glued to the background. 

Jan Luyken (1649-1712) was a Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver. He was born in Amsterdam, where he learned his trade from his father, Caspar Luyken. He married Maria at age 19 and they had 5 children. One of them, Kaspers, was also an engraver.
