Letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Aryeh Levin, Avi HaAsirim (Father of the Prisoners) – addressed to Rabbi Bezalel Rom and his family – Jerusalem, 1968.
The letter is written in his typical poetic language and is full of words of love. It seems that Rabbeinu was concerd with not hurting anyone. The entire frst part of the letter contains warm blessings and an apology for not responding. At the end of the letter, Rabbeinu greets them with success in the trial: "השי"ת יהי’ עמכם לזכותכם במשפט… אנחנו כולנו נתפלל להשי"ת לזכותכם במשפט ולהשיב אתכם במהרה אל ארץ אבותנו פדוים לציון ברנה…".

The Jerusalem Tzaddik Rabbi Aryeh Levin (1885-1969) was the son of Rabbi Binyamin Beinush. He was Mashgiach at the Etz Chaim yeshiva in Jerusalem and one of the greatest figures of the city. He was known for his charity and became known as Avi HaAsirim or Rav HaAsirim for visiting prisoners every Shabbos for more than 25 years, even during the British Mandate. He studied at the Volozhin yeshiva under Rabbi Refael Shapira, and was received his Rabbinic Semicha from Rabbi Chaim Berlin. Upon the establishment of the State of Israel he established the yeshiva now named after him, Beit Aryeh. He was the father-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and his descendants include Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky and Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein, Rav Kook of Tiberias and many others.
