The great Gaon Rabbi Yechezkel Bernstein the Rosh Yeshiva of Slabodka (1889-1942), author of the monumental book Divrei Yechezkel, one of the leading students of the Slabodka Yeshiva. In 1923, he established with the Saba of Slabodka the Or Yisrael Yeshiva, with Rabbeinu serving as Ram and eventually becoming the Rosh Yeshiva. Perished in Kovno during the Holocaust. His leading disciple was Maran haRav Shach. It is told that once, when Rav Shach was passing through the hall of the Ponovezh yeshiva, he saw a student closing the book Divrei Yechezkel and putting it down on a lectern. Rabbeinu approached, picked up the book and pressed it to his heart saying longingly, "He was my Rabbi".
