Mishnayot Seder Kodashim, large format. Printed by the brothers Chanina Lipa and Aryeh Leib and Yehoshua Heschel Shapira, the grandsons of the Rav of Slavuta. Two title pages in red and black. Zhytomyr, 1848.

Stains and varied aging blemishes. Moth damage and many moth perforations. Open tears to the title pages and first and last leaves – professionally restored. Fair overall condition. Re-bound with an impressive semi-leather binding.

On the first title page, the personal stamp of the holy Rav Rabbi Yosef Greenwald author of Vayechi Yosef of Pápa, when he was Dayan and Moreh Tzeddek in Satmar. In addition, stamps throughout the book of the Keren LeDavid Yeshiva in Satmar, which he headed.

The Admor Rabbi Yosef Greenwald of Pápa (1903-1984) was the last Rav of Pápa, Hungary before the Holocaust. He was the son of Rabbi Yaakov Yechizkiya Greenwald, the son of Rabbi Moshe Greenwald the author of Arugat HaBosem. After his marriage, he was appointed Dayan in Satmar, where his uncle and Rav, Rabbi Eliezer David Greenwald, served as the Rav of the city. After his Rav’s passing he headed the Keren LeDavid Yeshiva there. Succeeded his father as Rav of Pápa, and after only 3 years he was exiled with his community, many of whom, including his wife and ten children, were murdered.

After the war, he rebuilt his community in the United States. Today his son from his second marriage to the daughter of Rabbi Yissachar Weber serves as the Admor of Papa Shlita. Author Vayechi Yosef, Vaya’an Yosef, and more.
