A printed letter on an official letterhead with the signature of Rabbi Yitzchak RubensteinHarav of the congregation of Vilna. Dated 12 th Elul 1935. To the Jewish Agency regarding a Certificate [Aliyah license] for an orphan. With a stamp of the Jewish Agency. | Rabbi Yitzchak Rubenstein [1880- 1945], the last chief rabbi of Vilna on behalf of the Mizrahi and one of the leaders of the movement. He was born in Lithuania, studied in yeshiva and completed law school. He founded a chain of religious Jewish schools and yeshivot in Poland and Lithuania. Served as Minister for Jewish Affairs in Lithuania, and in this role fought for the rights of Jews in Europe. From 1922 until the outbreak of the Second World War he was a member of the Polish Sejm. In 1941 the American Zionist ad Hatzalah helped him emigrate to America. In New York he was appointed as Rosh Yeshiva of the Yitzchak Elchanan Yeshiva. He was active in New York in helping Polish Jewry. There were sometimes disagreements between him and Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, the Rabbi of Vilna on behalf of the Agudat Yisrael. Nevertheless, he participated in Rabbi Chaim Ozer funeral in 1941, amidst the impending shadow of war and eulogized him by the open grave teacher, all the disputes between us were solely for the sake of Heaven, and I ask for forgiveness if I ever disrespected you…". | 29 cm.
