Lot 226:
A long letter (17 lines) on an official letterhead in the handwriting and with the signature of Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Pearlman of Karlin. In the letter the Rebbe mentions the elders of the Chassidut Aharon Haltovsky and Moshe Meir Kirshenbaum. The Rebbe is exuberant and untypically offers many blessings: "May you be blessed from the source of blessing and salvation with all that is good, may only good and kindness pursue you on all days including the nights…and may you be written and sealed for life in the book of the righteous immediately for life and a good and joyous new year as you and the one who wishes for your health wishes, I bless him Avraham Elimelech Pearlman". | The Rebbe Rabbi Avraham Elimelech Pearlman of Karlin [1892-1942] son of the Rabbi Yisrael the ‘yanuka’ of Karlin. He served as Rebbe from 1921 following his father’s death in Frankfurt, and was the most famous Rebbe from among his brothers. He visited Israel several times. His final visit was in 1939 right before the Holocaust began. His disciples attempted to persuade him not to return to Europe, but despite knowing what was happening in Europe, he refused to stay, saying that "the Rabbi who saves himself and abandons his congregation during trying times is pathetic", and left on the last ship that leave Israel before the war. Before he left he distributed all of his possessions, including his glasses, to the elders of the Chassidut saying "this way there will be less for the Germans to loot from us" and "when we run through the mountains there we won’t need all these possessions".
