Lot 34:
Extremely rare document, a historical indication of the first zealotry wars and the relationship between Agudat Yisrael in its early days and Hungarian Jewry. A protest broadside against Agudat Yisrael, its activity and institutions. Printed at the press of Aharon Ber Meisels in Munkatch, apparently in 1923.
The broadside is divided into two columns:
The right column contains the protest: "אזהרה נחוצה מגדולי הדור והרבנים הי"ו מכמה מדינות יצ"ו (נגד האגודה)" (necessary warning by Gedolei Hador and the rabbis (against the Agudah) original parentheses). Written close to the congress of zealot rabbis in Tshop and the publication of the letter by the Rebbe the Rayatz of Lubavitch against Agudat Yisrael. Naturally, it defames the Gedolei Hador who founded Agudat Yisrael; to mitigate the harsh message, it qualifies the statement, adding that some of them (apparently referring to the Chofetz Chaim, Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin, the Imrei Emet and more) were misled by varied activists. It ends with the common cliche: had they known what these activists are doing, they would have protested even more than us.
The broadside is signed by leading contemporary rabbis: the Minchat Elazar of Munkatch, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum of Satmar, Rabbi Mordechai Winkler of Mad, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Ehrenreich and many more.
The left column contains a letter by Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld from Parashat Ekev, 1923. The letter was sent to the Minchat Elazar of Munkatch. At its beginning, he refers to Rabbi Akiva Yosef Schlesinger "who has left us to our own means and from Heaven continues his legacy". He then condemns the activity of Agudat Yisrael of founding workshops for girls: "..ומזמרים בקול אשה בערוה בכל יום בפומבי ואומרים שזהו תיקון גדול בעוה"ר הוי האומרים לחושך אור ולרע טוב…".
Original, extremely rare document, not in the National Library Ephemera Collection and has appeared in auctions! In addition, we did not manage to find a photocopy in the literature.
Size: 42X49 cm. Mounted on a matching cardboard and laminated for protection. Along its center a reinforcement of professional restoration. Good condition.
