Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahneman (1888-1969) was the Rosh Yeshivat Ponevezh in Lithuania before the Shoah and founded the yeshiva in Israel after the Shoah. He was the first leader of the Council of Torah Sages. He also founded the “Batei Avot” for children who survived the Shoah, and founded Kiryat Ponevezh and Yeshivat Grodna in Ashdod. The great sacrifices he made in establishing Torah life in Israel after the destruction of European Jewry was legendary, and there are streets named after him in Bnei Brak and Jerusalem.
