Sefer Chavat Daat, the famed work on the Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah of the Gaon Rabbi Yaakov of Lisa, the Netivot. Rare edition that had several variants (see the Bibliography of the Hebrew Book). Printed in Russia Poland in ca. 1815. [1], 3, [1], 7-12, 14-34, [1], 34-37, [34] leaves. Much moth damage, affecting the text. Stains and some taping. Fair overall condition. Old, worn binding. 

Signatures on the title page:  

– "הק’ יצחק איצק פרענקל מב"ח" (Yitzchak Itzak Frankel)

– "מאיר פערלס" (Meir Perles)

– "הק’ טוביה גדליה פריינד" – (Tuvia Gedlaya Feund) an additional notation handwritten by him on the title page

The Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel [of the Chalfon family] Av Beit Din of Kroli (1782 [or 1776]-1835), one of the leading disciples of the Chatam Sofer. The son of Rabbi Uri Lipman and brother of Rabbi Sheraga Feivel Frankel, the Gaon of Riska, and son-in-law of the Gaon Rabbi Yoav Av Beit Din of Santov. Succeeded his father-in-law in Stanov and later became the Rav of Kroli. His in-law gave him a manuscript of his work Chen Tov and shortly after, the young son-in-law returned it with his work on the book titled Zeved Tov. Both were published in 1806. His Rav, the Chatam Sofer, refers to him in his books with many superlatives (see: Chatam Sofer Vetalmidav 247-250; there you can also see a photocopy of his signature like the one appearing here). 

His son-in-law Rabbi Meir Perles Av Beit Din of Kroli (1811-1894) the son of Rabbi Yitzchak Moshe Perles. The son-in-law and successor as Av Beit Din of Kroli of Rabbi Yitzchak Frankel. A disciple of the Chatam Sofer who referred to his in his responses and a letter he sent him when he was only 18 years old: "להבח’ המופלג החרוץ ושנון כ"ה מאיר שי’ בנן של קדושים… לא אמנע להשיב מפני כבוד תורתו ואהבתי אליו…" (See more: Chatam Sofer Vetalmidav 309-310)


Rabbi Tuvia Gedalya ben Rabbi Yehoshua Freund of Kroli (passed away in 1879), the son of Rabbi Yehoshua Freund of Kroli and a disciple of the Chatam Sofer. Immigrated to the Holy Land following a dispute with the status quo community led by the Gaon Rabbi Meir Perles. Rabbeinu’s grandson was Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund, Gaon Av Beit Din of HaEidah HaChareidit (See more: Chatam Sofer Vetalmidav 155-156; there you can also see a photocopy of his signature like the one appearing here).
