Lot 107:
Letter on official letterhead, handwritten and signed by the Admor. Written during the height of the Shoah, during Aseret Yemei Tshuva of 1943. Addressed (after titles of importance and friendship) to Rabbi Hillel Medalya when he was in Dublin. At the beginning he blesses him with a good new year and requests forgiven (as is typical of the time of year). Then he expresses interest in his wellbeing and the state of Judaism in England: “In England Judaism is steadily declining and no one cares for its fate…” and he asks Rav Medalya to move to London. At the end he blesses him with gmar hatima tova and signs his name by hand. 27x20cm. Creases, overall good condition.
The Admor Rabbi Yerucham Leiner of Radzin (1888-1964) was the son of Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel the Likkutei Divrei Torah, brother of the Admor Rabbi Gershon Hanoch Henich (the Sidrei Taharot) also known as the Baal HaTekhelet. His immense talents were evident and he even corresponded with the Gaon of Berezan, and even a tshuva to him appears in his book Shut Maharsham. His articles written out of astonishing genius were published in the periodicals of the period. He wrote books on the revealed and mystical Torah, “Notes on the Yerushalmi”, “Notes on the Zohar”, “the Gra, a Man of Nigla and Nistar”, and “Zikaron LaRishonim.” Rabbi Dr. Hillel Medalia (1916 – 1977), left Russia in 1922. He received a Torah and general education, and received a doctorate in philosophy. He was one of the leaders of the Mizrahi movement in England, served as rabbi of Leeds (England), Dublin (Ireland) and Antwerp (Belgium). He published a book, which he called ‘Sheila’, which alludes to the name of his father – Shmaryahu Yehuda Leib, in conjunction with his name – Hillel. He also exalted the Shulchan Aruch with an English translation.
