At the top is a bird. Bears a dedication that notes it was given by Reb Zeev and his wife Chaya Horowitz in memory of their son, Avraham Zvi, killed when his ship the Erinpura was sunk in 1943. Length: 27cm. Weight: 125g. Good condition. The Erinpura was a transport and cargo ship sunk by German Air Force planes on May 1, 1943, during World War II. Most of the crew and soldiers onboard were killed, including 139 soldiers from the Mandate of Palestine who served in the Royal Cargo Corps in the 462nd Company that took part in the North African campaign. A memorial ceremony is held every year in memory of the ship’s passengers, on the 27th of Nissan, which is also the date of Yom HaShoah. The Jewish soldier Avraham Zvi Horowitz (Wiener) was born in 1917 is Zamosty, Bukovina (Romania), where he learned at the Romanian public school and yeshiva. He was active in the Zionist Youth organization, and in 1936 he moved to Israel, where he settled in Haifa and worked as a salesman at a medical agency.
