Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Pines (1874-1955) was the son of Rabbi Dover of Minsk, a descendent of the Gra, a great learner and autodidact, even though he never learned in a yeshiva—and he even wrote a number of books. Worked for the community during his time in Switzerland, he was in close contact with sages of his generation like HaRav Kook and Rabbi Haim of Brisk, Rabbi Ham Ozer Grodzinsky, and Rabbi Aharon Kotler, and more. Rabbi Yehiel Yaakov Weinberg and Rabbi Yehezkel Sarna were among his closest friends, and they even wrote remarks of appreciation in an introduction for one of his books which was published after his death. The son who wrote the above dedication was Rabbi Yaakov Yehoshua, a great talmid in Zurich. His daughter Devora married Rabbi Asher Sternbuch of London, and their children include Rabbi Moshe Shlita, Ra’avad of the Charedi community in Jerusalem, Rabbi Eliyahu (rabbi of the Mehzikei Dat community in Antwerp for many years, and Rabbi Dov of Bnei Brak, who received the dedication. Their daughter was married to Rabbi Meshulam David HaLevi Soloveitchik, a head of one of the Brisker yeshivot in Jerusalem.

The person receiving the dedication was Rabbi Dov Sternbuch of Gateshead and Bnei Brak was the son of Rabbi Asher of London, a descendent of the Gra. He was a huge talmid chacham who knew the Shas by heart. He was close with many sages, and was a student of the Gra”a Dessler. He had a special relationship with Maran Rabbi Haim Kanievsky, who forbid him from asking those at his beit midrash not to stand in his honor. He was brother of the Ra’avad of Antwerp, Rabbi Eliyahu Sternbuch, and the Ra’avad of the Charedi community, Rabbi Moshe Sternbuch. Died in 1990 when he was on his way to Minchah, aged 96.
