Recommendation letter in English for a teacher “Avraham Weisfisch”, who taught at the Talmud torah led by Rabbi Ashkenazi. Signed in English by hand, Rabbi Meir bar Schneur Zalman Ashkenazi, with his stamp in Hebrew and English. [1] leaf, official letterhead of the “Machzikei Talmud Torah”, 27cm. Light folding creases, very good condition.

Rabbi Meir bar Schneur Zalman Ashkenazi (1891-1954) was among the first Ashkenazi Jews in Shanghai. In 1926 with the spread of Communism he fled and reached Shanghai, where he remained upon the orders of the Rayatz for more than 20 years and led the Tomchei Temimim yeshiva there. He had a classic Chassidic Jewish appearance and he stood out there. He helped the waves of refugees arriving there during the Shoah, but in 1949 when the last refugees left Shanghai he too immigrated to Crown Heights. Among his descendants are rabbis from the Ashkenazi family in Kfar Chabad.
