TikkunLeilShmini before a brit milah, and the TikkunHaMohel. Amsterdam 1768. The cover has a wood engraved image of a circumcision. Page 12 has a “seder for milah for an older person” and for “anuseiYisrael coming from Spain and Portugal…” (thus the book before us testifies to the practice of circumcising anusim, people who have hidden or repressed their Judaism, even in the 18th century). The three last pages have a list of mohels in Portuguese working in Amsterdam and in other Portuguese communities, with dates of their activity from the years 1721-1765. [2], 17, [1] page. 14.5cm. Droshim and kavanot on the kabbalah, wonderful secrets and issues relating to the Redemption and the Messiah. By the holy Rabbi ShlomoMolcho (c. 1500-1532), a kabbalist who spoke in public about the Redemption of Israel, and who was executed by the Inquisition. Rabbi Hayyim Vittel speaks about him in his book Sha’areiKedusha that he dealt with practical kabbalah. The first word in his book is given within a bouquet of flowers, above which are to cherubs holding a crown. Signature of ownership on page 1c. Cover page and 2nd page were professionally repaired. Liber Nizachon Rabbi Lipmanni, the Book of Victory, answers to Christian claims against Judaism, “for victory against the Sadducees and Christians, forever pondering and mocking, printed here in the Altdorf yeshiva with great interest.” Before us is a complete copy, with two sections: Hebrew and Latin. Two covers, the first is illustrated, made with a wonderful engraving with three levels, telling the history of the world in 6000 years. The second cover is in Latin. Introduction in Latin. By Rabbi Yom Tov Lipman Milhausen (also called Tavyomi, died in 1440), a rabbi and posek halacha in Prague and at the end of his life in Erfurt. Philosopher and a polemicist against Christianity. In Elul 1399, a Christian plot was stirred against the Jews of Prague. Rabbi Yom Tov Lipman was forced to carry out a public debate against a converted Jew named Peter. The rabbi won the debate, but in Elul of the year after the debate 80 Jews from Prague were taken out and murdered. The book before us is a history of the debate with that convert. The many glosses in the book are from the period printing, with signatures of ownership. Preserved leather binding with rings. Remains of fasteners. By Rav Menachem YehoshuaWeizner (1840-1910 approximately). The author’s name appears only as initials on the booklet’s binding. The booklet is a long letter to the rabbis and leaders of Galicia and Bokovina, regarding the purchase of the rabbinate by money. His suggestion was, practically, to gather in Lviv led by the Av Beit Din to strengthen the religious leadership and found a fund. Admorim weren’t invited. But the activity would be done with their support. Printed by the Dorshei Shalom v’Emet. Stains. 31 pages, 22cm. Generally very good condition.

On Rashi’s commentary and the DerechHayyim commentary, by the Maharal of Prague. Cover page says Leipzig, without the name of the printer or year of printing (according to Winograd it was published in Warsaw in 1860). In Sighet, Romania there were two communities who fought one another: the Orthodox community, and the “Status Quo” community. In 1888 in Lviv a book “OhevMishpat” was published by the Sefardi community of Sighet (the Status Quo group). In response the book before us was published, with letters from rabbis and admorim supporting the Orthodox community. The page numbering in the volume before us is messed up, since the book was originally published as single pamphlets, and only later collected into one volume. Wider printing, Sighet Pelech.
