Mitzva Touch

Bronze sculpture, signed Austin Proo and dated 1968, 40 x 41 x 13 cm. The sculpture depicts a Jewish couple at the “Mitzva Touch” dance, a traditional Hassidic dance by the bride and groom, a moment of spiritual elevation. A Hassid from Poland who came to Eretz Israel on the eve of World War II, and was a prominent member of a Hassidic community in Tel Aviv –Yaffo, told his children on his death bed that he danced twice the “Mitzva Touch” dance in his life with their mother. The first time on their wedding night in Poland and the second time on their first night in Eretz Israel. Why am I telling this before my death? continued the man and immediately answered: because at the first dance there were many observers but on the second one only your mother and myself participated and the Creator of the world saw from above at the joy in Eretz Israel for Heaven’s sake, when nobody is watching. At my last hour, I wanted to share with you this elevating experience. One of his descendants, who was very moved by the story commissioned this sculpture from an artist immediately after the death of the head of the family, to commemorated the special moment. The sculpture was kept in a cupboard and almost nobody saw it, except from some close family members, who knew the secret. This is the reason why the bride is wearing a simple dress and not a bridal one and the groom is wearing a cap and not a spudik as is customary to wear on Shabbat and special occasions. The present lot comes from a private collector who purchased it from the family and heard the story as conveyed. In very good condition.
